On August 24-25, 2020, a two-day Workshop on Basic Machine Learning Techniques and Applications in Oilfields was held online for scientists and engineers of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The workshop was designed and led by CCMA Director Jinchao Xu and assisted by his strudent and postdocs  Jianhong Chen, Qingguo Hong, Jonathan Siegel, and Lian Zhang from the Pennsylvania State University and Dr. Chensong Zhang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences with the purpose of providing a self-contained introduction to basic AI techniques and their potential applications in oil and gas engineering. The workshop covered multiple machine learning methods, including principal component analysis, model order reduction, deep neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and recursive neural networks. An overview of many possible applications, such as the prediction of oil rate changes, image segmentation of rock slices, and data-driven reservoir modeling, was also included. More than 50 ADNOC professionals took part in the course and contributed to extensive and lively discussions about machine learning techniques and their real-world applications in the oil and gas industry.
